Feature Artist: Margriet Hogue

Margriet Hogue was born in the Netherlands and spent her formative years in Venezuela before immigrating to the east coast of Canada. After moving to Alberta as a teenager, Margriet studied textile and design at Olds College and weaving at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she honed her knowledge of colour theory and an appreciation for texture. In 1989 she established her own needlework business. Her business specializes in researching and reproducing samplers and needlework from museums in Europe and North America. She teaches at needlework workshops across North America and globally on-line.

In recent years Margriet has diversified into abstract painting. Various courses and workshops have inspired a love for the freedom from the structure and minutiae of her needlework background.

Artist Statement

I have had a career working with colour and textiles in the form of needlework and weaving. The use of mixed media allows me freedom to create by layering, by adding texture and by incorporating elements that the linear form and rigidity of my reproduction work does not afford. Painting allows me to be inspired and respond to my broader environment.
