“Atmosphere” by Marla Schole

“The real subject of every painting is light.” – Claude Monet

“Atmosphere” features the diverse, colourful landscape paintings of Marla Schole. Pictorial qualities of form, value, texture, line, and perspective are utilized in depicting a variety of landscape motifs. First and foremost, the power of light is revealed in all its forms – light filtering through trees, the reflected light and shadows of the setting sun, cloud formations illuminated on the horizon, or bright direct sunlight revealing the brilliant colours of nature. All works are rendered in oil paint on canvas.

Since graduating from The University of Alberta BFA program in 1984, Schole has made the depiction of the landscape her primary focus. Her aim is to depict her passion for the outdoors and the natural world. Her goal is not only to depict a place, but to convey a feeling of that place to the viewer. “Atmosphere” aims to draw the viewer into the landscape, in essence to “step into nature” to help them experience the feeling of a bright autumn day, the breaking light of a sunrise, or a freshly mown hay field.
